Concrete and Foundation Wall Coatings

Concrete Floor Coatings

At Basement Waterproofing Solutions, our standard for a durable, attractive concrete floor is an epoxy floor coating. While many people refer to “epoxy paint,” it’s important to note that epoxy and paint are chemically different products. Epoxy creates a tougher, longer-lasting surface, though it requires careful application by trained professionals.

We offer a full range of floor coatings: epoxy floor systems, durable paint coatings, and floor sealers, suitable for both residential and high-traffic areas.

Epoxy Floor Coatings

The choice of coating depends on usage and conditions:

  • Light-use areas can be served by one-part paint coatings.
  • Heavy-use areas such as garages or carports benefit from two-part, 100% solids epoxy, which chemically cures through a reaction between resin and hardener, creating a permanent, tough surface.

Preparation Steps for Floors

Proper preparation is critical for a lasting floor coating:

  1. Previously painted floors – Mechanically scrape and vacuum old coatings or stains.
  2. Repair cracks and blemishes – Cut cracks with a diamond blade and fill with rubber solution; voids filled with quick-drying cement.
  3. Clean and degrease – Sweep, vacuum, and remove grease using a degreaser and stiff brush.

Etch the concrete – Apply an acid solution to abrade the surface, rinse thoroughly, and allow the floor to dry completely before coating.

Foundation Wall Coatings

We have modernized our foundation wall coatings to block water, prevent dampness, and inhibit mold growth using a water-blocking primer combined with an epoxy paint.

Block Walls

  • If block walls leak heavily, we do not recommend painting without first installing a quality French drain, as water trapped in hollow block cavities will eventually decay the block from the inside.
  • Minor dampness or efflorescence can be treated with a paint coating if a French drain is not needed.

Solid Cement Walls

  • Even the best paint cannot stop water from penetrating thick solid walls if water pressure is high.
  • Paint coatings are mainly for cosmetic purposes or to help with minor dampness.

Previously Painted Walls

  • Recoat with a quality paint and primer combination.
  • Remove all peeling paint; otherwise, the new coating will also fail.

Wall Preparation

  • Ensure walls are clean, smooth, and dry.
  • Remove loose particles, protrusions, and repair cracks.
  • Acid etching may be required for heavily stained walls to ensure proper adhesion.

Summary:

Our approach ensures that concrete floors and foundation walls are properly prepared, coated, and protected. Whether it’s an epoxy floor, a durable paint coating, or a foundation wall treatment, proper surface preparation and professional installation are key to lasting performance and appearance.
