Michele Construction has been waterproofing basements for over 60 years. Throughout that time, we have developed and implemented finishing techniques that many contractors simply overlook.

For example, when installing drywall, we maintain a minimum clearance of ½ inch above the concrete slab. This gap is then covered by base moldings, which can be installed directly on the finished floor. This detail is critical because drywall is highly absorbent and can wick moisture up to four feet from the floor, creating an ideal environment for mold growth. In contrast, base moldings absorb moisture at a much slower rate and are less prone to rapid mold development.

Another important principle we follow is that no building materials—especially batt insulation—should ever come into direct contact with foundation walls. During heavy rain events, foundation walls can become damp, and that moisture can transfer into adjacent materials like drywall, leading to mold issues over time.

These are just a few of the preventative measures we take to help ensure your basement remains dry, healthy, and protected.

It’s also important to understand that basements are inherently vulnerable to water intrusion. Even with a properly installed and fully functional drainage system, other sources of flooding can occur. Most basements house water heaters, heating systems, and plumbing lines running through the ceiling. Any failure in these systems can result in unexpected water damage.
